What We offer You

  • We work with you to design an intensive, experiential learning program to either compliment an
academic course in the U.S.; or help you create a credit-based combined academic travel program
    in Nicaragua.
  • Programs can focus on issues such as ecological conservation, eco-tourism; culture, language and
history; globalization and models of development; socio-economic, sustainable and community
    development, and more.
  • Programs can also incorporate a service-learning component, research projects in the local
community or other kinds of experiential learning activities.
  • Consider bringing your students to the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua, a culturally and
linguistically diverse region of Central America that facilitates learning experiences for non-
    Spanish speaking students.

We offer your school unique opportunities to

  • Visit, learn & vacation in a variety of settings from small towns to farming communities to
    beautiful Caribbean beaches.
  • Meet, talk, learn and build relationships with community members; women's groups, cooperatives,
business leaders, farmers, students from local universities; as well as community, political, and
    NGO leaders.
  • Learn first hand about the real-life challenges of people in Nicaragua and how people in one
region are struggling to achieve real progress in the midst of pressures from globalization and
    material poverty.
  • A program where your students' personal experiences become the primary source for gaining
    knowledge.
  • Visit Communities & Social/Economic Development Projects: Your students gain a whole new
understanding of the topic at hand as you visit rural communities, micro-credit programs,
sustainable agricultural programs, small businesses, banks, health projects and more to learn from
local people about their accomplishments, challenges and overall experiences.  The visits will be
    designed according to your program.

Participant Experiences: 2006 UVa January-Term Course in Bluefields, Nicaragua:

  • "Thanks again for leading a wonderful, exciting and eye-opening trip to Nicaragua. I could not
have spent two weeks having a better time or growing more as a person than I did on this trip.”
Liz Stork, Political & Social Thought Honors Program, 3rd year student.

  • "I had an absolutely fabulous time and really got a lot out of it.  It was probably one of the best, if
not THE best, experiences of my life.” Julie Hudson, McIntire School of Commerce, 3rd year
    student.

  • “We spilt the world up so nicely with our black and white, but we need to realize that not
everyone sees the same shades as us.  Going to Nicaragua and studying with students who come
from a totally different background, a different economic background, and a different cultural
background, really made me understand that.” Humayun Tokhi, McIntire School of Commerce,
    3rd year student.

  • “I also want to thank you for the incredible experience in Nicaragua, and the different viewpoints
our discussions exposed to me. It really forced me to think about why I believe what I do, and
how to explain it.”—Farah Sheriff, Economics and Foreign Affairs major, 3rd year student.
