TRANSPORTATION Please arrange to arrive in Managua, Nicaragua by noon on the first day of the trip. To arrange your airfare, we suggest working with Peace Frogs Travel/Outfitters, a small company based in Charlottesville, VA. We will meet you at the airport and fly as a group to Corn Island that afternoon. On the final day of the program, we will also accompany you to your airline's counter at the Managua airport and make sure that you make it onto the plane. You can also choose to arrive in Managua the night before. We recommend staying at the Hotel Camino Real, a professionally-run and dependable hotel located just a 2-minute shuttle ride from the airport (free pick-up and drop off). The trip cost does not cover your expenses if you choose to arrive the day before the trip. ABOUT CORN ISLAND "Corn Island is 10 square kilometers of forested hills, mangrove swamps, and stretches of white, coral beaches. The mangrove swamps and estuaries that lines several stretches of coastline are crucial to the island's water supply and the islanders have fiercely resisted attempts by foreign investors to drain or fill them; ...Three distinct layers of reef, composed of more than 40 species of coral, protect the north side of the island. Of the six sea turtle species swimming off Nicaragua's shores, four live in Caribbean waters. On land, Corn Island boasts three endemic species of reptiles and amphibians ..." - Moon Handbooks Nicaragua, 2005, Randy Woods & Joshua Berman, Pg. 300. "Pirates on their way to maraud the coast of Central America and Nicaragua's Rio San Juan first visited here in the 16th century, sometimes by accident after the reefs tore the bottom of their ships open. But Corn Island was inhabited long before that by the Kukras, a subtribe of the Mayagnas ...The Kukras were eventually assimilated into the Miskitos. Nowadays, the native Creole population share the island with an increasing number of menial laborers from the mainland, who have overtaken the Creoles in number and have increased the island's total people to nearly 9,000 people. Native islanders are direct descendants from several of the more infamous European pirates, as well as English royalty and plantation owners-don't be surprised if you meet people with names like Kennington."
